QuickBolt Thread Extras

The Thread Extras tab is where you select and define other items that can be added to the thread of the bolt or screw.

  1. The Shank can be selected independently and has no dependencies on any other components (i.e. should you wish to do so, you can just generate a shank). In contrast, the Tip can only be selected if the option to generate a thread has been selected (on the Thread tab).
  2. Most of the values of the Thread Extras tab will be automatically generated if a thread was selected using the Presets tab, or if the Generate Symmetric Profile button was clicked on in the Thread tab.

Shank

When this option is selected a Shank will be generated for the bolt or screw. A Shank is the smooth cylindrical region that lies between the head and the thread of the bolt or screw. A Shank may be generated in isolation.

The parameters that enable you to change the Shank are:

  • Diameter - The diameter of the shank. A value of zero is illegal and will generate a warning message.
  • Length - The overall length of the shank. A value of zero is illegal and will generate a warning message.

Note: To blend the Shank into the thread, the end of the Shank is tapered for a distance of 1.5 * "Thread Pitch" down to the Minor Diameter of the thread.

Tip

When this option is selected a tip will be generated for the bolt or screw. The tip is the smooth cylindrical region that protrudes beyond the end of the thread.

The parameters that enable you to change the Tip are:

  • Diameter - The diameter of the tip. A value of zero is illegal and will generate a warning message.
  • Length - The overall length of the tip. A value of zero is illegal and will generate a warning message.
  1. If the tip Diameter is set larger than the end of the threaded portion of the bolt or screw then a warning message will be displayed and the tip Diameter will be automatically limited to the diameter of the end of the thread. Typically, this might happen if you've decided to taper the thread and forgotten to reduce the tip Diameter correspondingly.
  2. The tip Diameter may be set to a smaller value than the diameter of the end of the thread
