Octane Render for Lightwave 2024 - Restrictions
Last modified: 10 March 2025Octane doesn't support complex polygons or polygons with holes. To avoid artifacts user must work only wth 3 or 4 vertex polygons.
Octane is a GPU render engine. It can't use any kind of CPU shaders, materials, textures or any other kind of nodes available inside LightWave. You must always use the Octane nodes to shade the objects.
The plugin does not support LightWave material parameters like “T” texture layers (LightWave 2015) or LightWave nodes (LightWave 2018+). Only a few basic material parameters (color, diffuse, specular or transparency) are supported by Octane.
An exception is the support of the LightWave procedural texture nodes. LightWave Procedural nodes need to be 'baked' at 1K, 2K, 4K, 8K, etc as texture resolution by connecting the output of the procedural node to the 'Procedural' input pin of the Octane Material node.
Lightwave Gradients can be used via the Octane Texture Image Node. See here.
LightWave native lights don't work with Octane. Users must use only the Octane light to work with Octane.
Octane has it's own color space functions and tone mapping. To work with Octane user must always disable the LightWave color space (set all values to Lineal). LightWave color space functions are not supported by the plugin.
Currently Octane doesn't support all ray visibility options. Only the dissolve functions and Unseen by Camera and Cast Shadows work.
Octane can't render particle systems, but you can use a LightWave instancer over a particle system to render object instances using the particles data. It also can't work with 1 or 2 vertex polygons, but you can render 2 vertex polygons chains as Octane hairs.
LightWave Image Editor options are not supported by the plugin. Octane reads the maps from the files itself, and can't process the Image Editor options.
To use UDIMs you must use the Octane Texture Image Node and point it to the UDIM tile sequence (starting with IMAGE_1001.png) as LigthWave's Image Editor settings are not available to Octane. You will need to know the tile size for the Octane Texture Image node.
